DHY8101-Skills Assessment 1Reflection
This is my reflection

  • I observed in the dental clinic it was incredibly enthusiastic, genuine, cheerful, and helpful, and personality would fit perfectly into what I consider the typical dental hygienist. I seemed very well prepared and confident in my ability to treat my patient, I got a good experience in Prob in the mandible lower left, and how to record PD if the patient has deep pocket more than 4mm. Also, I learned how to used Explorer 11/12, and CH3 in the maxillary lingual anterior teeth, and maxillary lingual posterior right teeth and how to used mirrors in this situation. and I got a good experience in sickle scalar Nevi 1, Nevi 3 when patient has a calculus in the anterior teeth and posterior teeth. also, Besides the appropriate clock and chair positions, I was aware of many proper techniques in dental hygienist. Over all the experience was useful and also gave me confidence in practicing the profession in the future.
  • The prevention of oral diseases came more and more in focus as there is evidence that oral health is not only a matter of oral wellbeing and quality of life; it can also affect the overall health. Therefore, it is important not only to maintain the chewing function of the teeth, but also to decrease inflammatory processes or pain and maintain the aesthetics for social and psychological reasons. and this is I learned from this course how to reduced the periodontal disease and how to used the instruments that prevent any pathogenic occur in the teeth. So the skill assessment 1 gave me energy to start with patient and the faculty help me a lot to give me confident how to used the correct position of the instruments, like the direction of the clean the surface, if towered or a way for me. So concept of instruments and work in the clinic is the basis of the dental hygiene profession.
  • I improved my dental hygienist skills by Practice on dental models in addition read the books and study hard to understands the materials and the correct information about the all instruments. I have confident and aware of my strengths. Also, I aware of my downfalls and skills I need to work on. Knowing what I need work on, will give you focus.  I don’t hesitate in asking for help. If, I just can’t seem to adapt an instrument and remove calculus from the lingual of teeth , I asked an instructor and work with them on her technique. My instructors became educators because they have a true passion for shaping bright, new hygienists.  I pick their brains because they are full of awesome experience and knowledge. I hope that every dental hygienist can find their support system and launch into a long and successful career.

  • My experience in the clinic was very useful, I did a nice job in the Ultrasonic, Right and Left in the Maxillary lingual and Buccal, I got a good experience in the Gracey curette 1/2 in the maxillary lingual anterior teeth, and Gracey 13/14 and 15/16, maxillary lingual posterior teeth. Besides the appropriate clock and chair positions, During a pre-clinical dental hygiene simulation, I witnessed a student demonstrating exceptional patient rapport and communication skills. They made a nervous patient feel at ease, which not only improved the patient's experience but also emphasized the importance of the human connection in providing quality dental care.
  • In a Dental Hygiene Care course, I typically learn and develop competencies related to patient care and oral health promotion , such as Patient-Centered Care, Communication Skills, Trust and Comfort, Behavioral Change and Education, and Interpersonal Skills  are a key competency in dental hygiene. The ability to connect with patients, show empathy, and create a comfortable environment is vital for building a strong patient-practitioner relationship and delivering effective care. These competencies and concepts are integral to providing high-quality dental hygiene care.
  • I improved my dental hygienist skills by Seek Feedback which is encourage feedback from instructors, mentors, or peers. They can provide valuable insights into my communication skills and how to enhance them further. Clinical Experience, Apply what I have learned in real clinical settings. Continue to interact with a variety of patients to further develop my communication skills and adapt my approach based on individual patient needs. Finally, Join dental hygiene professional associations and participate in their events and resources. These organizations often offer opportunities for networking and learning from experienced professionals.

Reflecting on my Mock CDCA experience,

At first, I experienced confidence and nervousness during the detection and removal calculus of the CDCA exam. In the exam, I began detecting the deposits using Explorer ODU 11/12, and I used the skills that I had learned from my instructor on how to identify them using the working end of the Explorer and moving slowly to feel the calculus. So, this approach helped me catch the calculus in the exam, particularly in the posterior teeth #3. I could detect them very well but encountered some difficulty with the finer subgingival calculus on #5; I couldn’t feel the calculus in this area, which caused me some struggle; my technique felt somewhat less smooth, and I hoped my detection would be accurate.

I prepared for calculus detection with my faculty before the exam; she gave me the correct technique and proper angulation, working on the distal side, and then moved to the other sides to detect the calculus. I used the skills in the exam. Maybe I missed some areas, but I realized I could have spent more time working on my adaption. During the exam, there were a few moments when I was thinking about myself, whether I was applying enough detection or if I was at the correct angle for the best tactile feedback. I could remove the calculus in the second part of the exam.

This experience taught me that detecting subgingival calculus requires practice and confidence. I could feel the difference between light, moderate, and heavier deposits, but sometimes, I learned how to best approach the deeper or harder-to-reach areas. I also realized how important it is to keep a steady rhythm sometimes; rushing to finish a quadrant caused me to miss some smaller pieces. In addition, the exam included a probing technique, and I was very confident in measuring the depth by prob without any difficulties; I am good in this area, and I hope my reading will be correct.

In the end, my experience in CDCA helped me focus more on my detected sensitivity and learn to better use my instruments to feel for deposits, especially in harder-to-reach areas. I also practiced the detection adjustments to make removing calculus smoother and more efficient. More exposure to different cases and practice with various patients would help my skills and confidence in these areas and help me pass the Board exam next month.

Mock CDCA Outcomes Reflection

The Mock CDCA was an excellent representation of the real exam. It highlighted the difference between interacting with patients and practicing on a typodont, which presented its own challenges. This experience provided advice and faculty feedback on areas for improvement, along with helpful tips and techniques to enhance my performance.

After receiving my results from the mock CDCA exam, I gained valuable insight into my preparedness for the real exam. While I feel confident in my knowledge and clinical skills, I recognize areas that need improvement to ensure I perform at my best. The mock exam gave me good feedback on both my strengths and weaknesses, allowing me to develop a more targeted approach to my study and practice routines.

I need to improve my time management, particularly in completing the calculus detection efficiently while maintaining accuracy. I spent too much time on certain steps, which could pose a challenge during the exam. Additionally, I need to focus on refining my instrumentation techniques like Gracey 13/14, especially in areas where deep calculus detection and removal were inconsistent with the ultrasonic device.  Ensuring precision in my angulation and adaptation will be crucial for achieving optimal clinical outcomes. Comparing my results to how I thought I performed, I realized that while I felt confident in certain areas, I was very cautious to prevent any minor or major trauma.

Before the real CDCA exam, I will practice several strategies to enhance my performance. First, I plan to engage in more hands-on activities, particularly in areas where I struggled. I will also seek feedback from instructors to gain additional perspectives on improving my technique. Additionally, I will work on increasing my speed and efficiency while maintaining accuracy by simulating exam conditions during practice sessions. To make these improvements, I will dedicate more time to reviewing exam criteria and practicing with mock patients. I am confident that I will be better prepared for the real CDCA exam and ready to demonstrate my proficiency as a dental hygienist.
